How to Get Your Title in South Carolina

If you’re in the process of selling your vehicle, you probably already know that your title is an important document that you’ll need to complete the sale. But, what happens if your title is lost, stolen, or damaged?

In South Carolina, you can obtain a duplicate title from the DMV. Here’s how to get started:

Complete Form 400, Application for Certificate of Title/Registration. You’ll need to use blue or black ink to fill out the application. Be careful when filling it out, they don’t allow for any strikeovers, erasures, or correction fluid on the document. Also, make sure you have an accurate reading of your car’s odometer mileage and any information about current liens on your vehicle.

Note that the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles will only issue you a title if your vehicle is located in South Carolina.

You’ll also need to provide identification. You can submit a copy of your driver’s license, your passport, a permanent residency card, or an employment authorization document.

There is a fee of $15.00 to receive your duplicate title.

Once you’ve completed your application you can drop it off at your local South Carolina DMV office or mail it to the following address:

South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 1498
Blythewood, SC 29016-0024

Now all that’s left for you to do is wait for your new title to arrive in the mail.
