If you’re considering selling your car in the near future in Louisiana, you’ll need to make sure you have your vehicle’s title. If yours has gone missing or is otherwise destroyed or mutilated, you’ll need to get it replaced. Luckily, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles has a simple procedure on how to do this. If you need to replace your title or never received one in the first place, you’ll need to fill out the Vehicle Application From (DPSMV1799). Make sure to get it notarized!

If you have the vehicle’s registration available, you should also submit a copy of this with your application. If the registration isn’t available, they request that you include a note of explanation. These steps will help you get your replacement title sooner and will keep your application from being accidentally rejected.

If you’re requesting this title for someone else, you’ll also need to include a notarized power of attorney with the application as well.

There is a $68.50 fee for the title, as well as an $8.00 handling fee. But, be warned that these fees may vary from county to county.

There are multiple ways you can go about paying your fees:

In person, they will accept payment via credit/debit card, cash, money orders, electronic funds transfer and E-checks. Please note that there may be transaction fees associated with different forms of payment.

If you’d prefer to mail in your payment, your options are personal or business checks, cashiers checks, money orders, or electronic funds transfer. You also will need to include your driver’s license number, your telephone number, and your street address. They will return your payment if you don’t include these things!

Once you’ve got your payment handled and application filled out you can either head to your local Office of Motor Vehicles or mail it off to their headquarters.
