How To Replace a Car Title
Replacing a Car Title
Replacing a car title can seem like a stressful situation. It’s usually always something you need ASAP to sell a vehicle. Getting a replacement is generally pretty easy but it will vary by state and county.
Getting Started
The first place to start is by checking your state's DMV website.. Most states offer online services to request a duplicate title and you can download the form from the DMV website or fill it out online. The application will ask for details like your name, the car’s make and model, and the reason you're requesting a replacement title.
Next, you’ll want to make sure you have the identification documents required in your state. You’ll typically need proof of identity (like a driver’s license), the vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), and sometimes a lien release if the car was financed and the loan is paid off.
The Process
You can start the process in person or by mail. You will generally need to mail the following to their county tax collector’s office or DMV:
- Photocopy of a valid picture ID
- Written request to have an electronic title (with no lien) printed
- Some type of title fee payment
- For acceptable payment types, visit your local tax collector’s website.
Following that, you’ll have to do the worst thing of all….wait for your new title to arrive. Once you've submitted your request and paid the fee, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for the DMV to process and mail your new title. You can always follow up with the DMV or tax office on the status.
And that's it! While it might be a bit of a hassle, the process is fairly simple. Just make sure to keep your new title in a safe place so you don’t have to go through it all again!
