A Little About Appleton, Wisconsin!
Appleton is a small city in northeastern Wisconsin. It is known for its historic homes and attractions as well as its convenient location along the Fox River.
It is considered the largest of the Fox Cities, which is a group of cities and towns situated along the river.
Geography
The Fox River runs right through the heart of downtown Appleton. Historically, this connected Appleton with other cities in eastern Wisconsin, creating trade routes.
Lake Winnebago is also located directly south of the city. Appleton is roughly one hour away from the shores of Lake Michigan and roughly half an hour from downtown Green Bay.
It is also roughly an hour and a half north of Milwaukee. Many of the city’s restaurants and small businesses are located in the downtown district near the river.
There are many historic homes in this area, while newer suburban developments sprawl north and west of downtown. Appleton is located on the plains of Wisconsin.
The summers are fairly hot and humid while winters are much colder. However, the city’s inland location means that it doesn’t see as much snow in the winter as other nearby cities.
The area tends to see more precipitation in the summer, with regular rainstorms.
History
The Menominee and Ho-Chunk native tribes historically occupied the area where Appleton and the nearby town of Oshkosh are now.
European fur traders eventually made their way to the area in the early 19th century in an effort to do business with the tribes in the area.
The Menominee tribe eventually negotiated the Treaty of the Cedars with the federal government in 1836, essentially ceding the area where Appleton is now.
Appleton was officially settled in 1847. It started as several unincorporated villages that eventually merged into one.
Lawrence University was founded around this time as well, and remains one of the premier liberal arts universities in the area.
The first hydroelectric Edison power station was also built in Appleton during this time, and it powered the city’s first paper mill. The paper industry remained an important part of the economy for many decades to come.
The city was also one of the first in Wisconsin to have a telephone, and replaced its gas street lamps with electric versions in some neighborhoods.
Appleton was also the first city in the country to have an electric streetcar system, which they launched in 1886. The streetcar system ran until 1930, when they were replaced with buses.
As the city grew, it attracted Dutch, German, and Polish immigrants in large numbers.
In the 20th and 21st century, the city became much more diverse, attracting residents from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
Culture
Appleton is the cultural and economic center of the Fox Cities area. There are two major medical centers in the city, which serve residents from many of the nearby cities.
Appleton International Airport offers flights to major cities like Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Denver, and more. The Fox Cities Exhibition Center is a major convention center that hosts regional events and conferences.
Lawrence University remains in downtown Appleton. The university was one of the first coed institutions in the United States. It offers a variety of liberal arts degrees and is also known for its conservatory of music.
The campus is home to many historic buildings as well as some newer facilities that are LEED-certified. Because it is so prestigious, Lawrence University attracts students from all over the United States, many of whom live in nearby Appleton.
Downtown Appleton is also home to many historic buildings from the 19th century, many of which are open to the public.
The History Museum at The Castle features exhibits on local history, including exhibits about famous Appleton residents like Harry Houdini.
The Paper Discovery Center is in a restored paper-making facility and features interactive exhibits about paper. The Hearthstone Historic House Museum is located right on the Fox River and has been preserved from the 19th century.
It was the first residence to be powered by the city’s hydroelectric power system. There are many reputable arts and entertainment centers in Appleton.
The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center hosts many local performing arts groups as well as touring productions. The Trout Museum of Art hosts a variety of visual art exhibits and local events. In the suburbs, the Fox River Mall is one of the largest shopping centers in the metro area.
There are several large parks in Appleton. Memorial Park offers baseball fields, an ice skating rink, a playground, and a fishing pond, among other outdoor facilities. City Park is located closer to the downtown area and hosts many outdoor events in the summer.
