Experience Kenmore Plantation
Kenmore is known as the most elegant house in town. It was built in 1775 by George Washington’s sister and her husband, Fielding Lewis. Lewis ran a prosperous mercantile business and during the Revolutionary War, he loaned the state over 7,000 pounds to the war.
He was never paid back and he lost his business. Now, you can still visit the Kenmore Plantation, his Georgian- style mansion. With colorful paint, gorgeous plaster ceilings, and fine decorative arts, it is interesting to experience.
Visit Downtown
Take a walking tour of downtown Fredericksburg. Here you can visit several Early American sites. One option is to view Mary Washington’s house. This was the mother of George Washington.

Fredericksburg encompasses more than just colonial history. During the Civil War, there was even fighting in the streets. Around four major Civil War battles were fought on more than 7,000 acres of the National Park Service.

If you want to get more exercise than just walking around downtown, you can go to the Heritage Trail. This is a boardwalk that leads to 17 acres of American sandstone quarry. This was the stone used to construct the U.S. Capital and the White House.
