The Austin area has been a human habitat for over 11,000 years! When European settlers arrived to the area in 1730, the area was settled by the Tonkawa tribe. Throughout the 1830s, people began settling along the Colorado River, near today’s central part of Austin. Unfortunately, tension began to rise with the native people and area’s growth slowed as conflicts began to breakout. By 1839, the area was chosen to replace Houston as the state capital and was incorporated under the name “Waterloo.” The name was shortly afterward changed to “Austin,” to honor Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of Texas.”

Throughout the 1840s, Texas Rangers battled with the Comanche tribe, eventually pushing them west, resulting in exponential growth and expansion in Austin. The capitol building was completed in 1888 and was claimed as the seventh-largest building in the world. Throughout the 1920s and 30s, Austin began many community initiatives to increase the city’s natural beauty. Austin’s current association with pop culture, country music, and the town’s slogan, “Keep Austin weird,” all started in the 1970s with the rise of Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Asleep At the Wheel. South By Southwest was also founded around this time and solidified Austin as The Live Music Capital of the World.
