A Little About Rogersville, Tennessee!
Geography of Rogersville
Located by the beautiful Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Rogersville is one of Tennessee's lesser-known gems. Settled in the late 18th century by the grandparents of the one and only Davy Crockett, Rogersville is named after its founder, Joseph Rogers.
Though few know it, Rogersville is home to the state's second-oldest courthouse in the Hawkins Courthouse. Rogersville is also home to the state's first-ever newspaper known as The Knoxville Gazette. Even the state's first post office was located in Rogersville.
However, Rogersville did not become an economic hotbed with success on par with that of other large Tennessee cities such as Nashville and Knoxville. Rogersville's population hovers around the 5,000 mark.
Though Rogersville is not the largest or most populous city in Tennessee, it is worth visiting and living in thanks to its historical sites, welcoming locals and lovely natural scenery.
History of Rogersville
The roots of Rogersville date all the way back to 1775 when Davy Crockett's grandparents settled in the colony known as Watauga. However, the Crockett family ended up selling its property to Colonel Thomas Amis, a Huguenot, following an attack by an American Indian tribe.
Rogersville quickly expanded within the five years that followed the arrival of the Crockett family, establishing a protective palisade, a fort, a store, a distillery and a blacksmith shop within half a decade's time. The seat of local county government was established at what is modern day Rogersville in 1785.
Fast forward to the country's Civil War and Rogersville surprisingly emerged unscathed. While many other southern cities suffered widespread damage and destruction, Rogersville remained intact.
The city went on to be the state's cradle of journalism. However, businesses have not moved to the area, largely because of the city's small size. All in all, Rogersville covers 3.4 square miles. The entirety of this space consists of land.
The city's Town Council acquired three acres of a vacant shopping center in 2020, aiming to transform it into a campus for civic service highlighted by an expansive community center, a concessions space for nearby park-goers and a town hall.
Locals and tourists enjoy fishing at nearby Crockett Creek and the Holston River. Rogersville is also within 20 minutes of Kingsport and a mere hour north of Knoxville.
Culture of Rogersville
Drive through Rogersville, take in all the city has to offer then segue to Knoxville and/or Kingsport and you will have plenty of things to do along with interesting stories to tell when you get back home.
Rogersville's Heritage Days are particularly popular. Held on the second full weekend each October in Rogersville's downtown center, this celebration draws in Tennessee residents from neighboring communities as well as local Rogersville residents.
Other local popular events include the Rogersville Holiday Festival featuring a Holiday Tour of Homes within Rogersville's historic district along with an unforgettable Yule Log celebration at the city's courthouse square.
Rogersville's Fourth of July Celebration is also worth attending, featuring colorful fireworks, tasty treats and cool drinks. Continue driving through Rogersville and you will eventually stumble upon one of the local parks.
Rogersville City Park, Crockett Spring Park and Swift Memorial Park are the city's top three green destinations. Rogersville City Park is especially enjoyable, featuring an amphitheatre, half a dozen baseball and softball fields with lights, illuminated pavilions, multiple picnic shelters and two lovely walking trails.
Take a spin through Rogersville and you will be impressed with the charm and character of this highly unique Tennessee city. Rogersville is home to the Appalachian Quilt Trail featuring gorgeous quilts with artful designs. Be sure to stop by the Amis Mills Eatery for some tasty local fare.
If you plan on staying in town for the evening or an extended vacation, you will find the quaint Hale Springs Inn is more than welcoming. Additional local highlights include the Thomas Amis Historic Site, Rogersville Main Street, Red Dog Ridge Farms, the Rogersville Printing Museum and more.
In fact, there are even downtown tours of Rogersville's Main Street. If you want to do some shopping or check out the local Rogersville arts scene, swing by Wendy's Simple Treasures, LuElla's Gift Market and the Local Artists Gallery.
If you run out of things to do, take a drive or a walk down Rogersville’s Main Street and you are sure to find something new and interesting that piques your interest.
