A Little About Adamsburg, Pennsylvania!

Adamsburg is a small town in western Pennsylvania.

It is part of the broader Pittsburgh metro area and is a borough of Westmoreland County.

Geography

The town of Adamsburg is very small, at just 0.3 square miles. As of 2019, there are less than 200 people who live in the town. Adamsburg is located in southwestern Pennsylvania, west of the Allegheny Mountains.

The topography consists mainly of rolling hills and dense forests, with some small creeks nearby. Adamsburg experiences the four standard seasons, with a climate that is hot and fairly humid in the summer and cold and snowy in the winter.

The area also experiences distinct spring and fall seasons. The Pittsburgh area is known for having a very low risk of natural disasters when compared to other major cities, making it statistically a very safe place to live.

The town is located just a 30-minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh. It is located near the meeting point of Interstate 76 and US Route 30. Adamsburg is also within driving distance of many other major cities - for example, both Washington, D.C. and Columbus, Ohio are within a four-hour drive.

History

Adamsburg is part of Westmoreland County and was founded in 1773. The county seat is Greensburg, which is just a few miles to the west of Adamsburg and has long been an important economic center in this region of the country.

The area was officially around the end of the Revolutionary War, when travelers between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh stopped to build a small settlement.

Adamsburg and the rest of Westmoreland County remained relatively underdeveloped until the 1850s, at which point more small businesses started to open up. Rail connections started to make the area a more desirable place to live and work.

Additionally, mining opportunities in the mountains nearby drove even more population growth. By the 20th century, Greensburg and the rest of Westmoreland County began to grow as an educational and cultural center.

Seton Hill University opened up, as did a new University of Pittsburgh campus. This led to an increase in residential buildings in the area as well as new retail centers opening up.

However, the county made an effort to preserve many historic buildings in the area to retain their detailed architecture.

The population of the greater Pittsburgh area started declining in the 1970s and ‘80s as a result of a changing economy that focused less on industry. The population of Westmoreland County started declining in the 1990s, continuing this trend.

Many cities and towns in the area have focused on revitalizing their downtown areas and preserving historic buildings as a response to this decline in population.

Culture

Because Adamsburg is just a short drive away from Pittsburgh, it shares many cultural characteristics with the city. Many residents speak with the unique Western Pennsylvania accent, which features its own words and phrases as well as a staccato quality that is unique to the region.

The accent developed over time as a variety of different immigrants made their way to the city and put their own stamp on the language. Pittsburgh is known for its tradition of philanthropy, which has resulted in many notably cultural institutions.

Adamsburg residents can make the quick drive into Pittsburgh to enjoy things like the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Science Center, Pittsburgh Zoo, Phipps Conservatory, National Aviary, and more.

Pittsburgh has its own symphony orchestra, opera, and ballet, all of which are well-regarded in the performing arts community. The city is also known for its cuisine, and has several restaurants that have been nationally recognized. Pittsburgh’s local food is influenced heavily by Eastern European cuisine.

Throughout the second half of the 20th century, Westmoreland county was known for its malls. The Westmoreland Mall continues to be one of the largest shopping centers in the region, and there are several other retail strips along the highway between Adamsburg and Greensburg.

While some of the malls in the area have been condensed or closed over the last few decades, local governments have instead invested in retail districts in downtown areas and supporting small businesses.

Since Adamsburg is nestled away in the Appalachian mountains, there are plenty of things to do outdoors in the region. There are several golf clubs and public parks in nearby towns.

Those who like to be a bit more adventurous can enjoy nearby Loyalhanna Lake National Recreation Area, which is a good place for camping, fishing, boating, and more. The area is particularly beautiful in the fall, when the leaves start to change colors.

Adamsburg may be a very small town, but it is an excellent place to take advantage of everything that western Pennsylvania has to offer.
