A Little About Altoona, Pennsylvania
Geography
Altoona, home to around 46,000 people is ranked just outside of the 10-most populated cities in the state of Pennsylvania. The city's metropolitan statistical area encompasses the entirety of Blair County, meaning this space has a population of around 130,000 people.
About 100,000 of these individuals live within a 5-mile radius of the city's central business district. Altoona’s growth was fueled by the rise of the railroad industry. Though the rail industry has declined in the late 20th century and throughout the 21st century, Altoona is still thriving thanks to its burgeoning medical industry.
History
Most people are surprised to learn the city of Altoona was originally founded by the Pennsylvania Railroad way back in the middle of the 19th century. The city of Altoona was originally meant to be used as a site for a store and a maintenance complex. Altoona was officially incorporated as a borough in the winter of 1854.
Altoona officially became a city through legislation passed in April of 1867. The inspiration for Altoona's namesake allegedly stems from the Latin word of "altus" which translates to "high" in English. However, some argue that the city's name has no ties to this Latin word, insisting the name is inspired by the city of Altona in Germany.
Altoona's formation is centered on the sale of David Robinson's farm to a Philadelphia resident named Archibald Wright. Wright transferred the property to his children who created building lots that served as the foundation of Altoona.
Some local historians insist Wright’s son spent much of his time in Georgia's Cherokee country where there was a town named Allatoona, which ultimately inspired the naming of Altoona, PA. In Cherokee, Allatoona means "high lands of great worth."
It is particularly interesting to note Altoona temporarily altered its name for two months in 2011 to "POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" in a deal that provided local government with $25,000. The city took the money as a component of a marketing scheme to promote a film with the same name.
Altoona's growth jumped in the late 1800s. The local population jumped from 2,000 in the 1850s to 10,000 in the 1870s and 20,000 in the 1880s. The spike in demand for automobiles throughout the Civil War boosted local growth. Drive through Altoona in the summer, spring and fall and you probably won't suffer through any weather-related drama.
Altoona receives some rain in these months yet its temperatures are quite tolerable. However, Altoona’s winter months are fairly cold.
The area receives some snow during December, January and February so be sure to dress appropriately if you are in town during the winter.
Culture:
Make your way through Altoona and you will find the area's local draws are highlighted by Mansion Park Stadium, which has been revered as one of Pennsylvania's top athletic complexes for several years. If you are hungry and want to sample the local fare, head on over to the Knickerbocker and Tavern for some delicious food and a cold beverage or two.
Though the city's railroad system no longer drives economic growth, Altoona has a wide array of employers including UPMC Altoona, the James E. Van Zandt VA Medial Center, the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital and plenty of service and retail businesses.
Altoona is home to the Double A Eastern League's Altoona Curve baseball team. The Curve is the minor league squad of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Altoona is also home to the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, a site that has been open to the public for nearly an entire century.
Additional Altoona landmarks include the Jaffa Shrine Center, the Mishler Theatre, Altoona Works' Juniata Shops, the Railroaders Memorial Museum and the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
Make your way over to historic Fort Roberdeau and you will feel at peace. This county park spans more than a hundred acres of land. In fact, the park's personnel provide guided tours for those who want to learn more about the area and Altoona's history.
If you enjoy skating or if you have kids who want to learn how to skate, visit Galactic Ice at 750 Park Ave. Here, you will find open skating where you can take lessons in regular ice skating or figure skating. Black & Gold Tavern is one of the area's most popular watering holes.
This restaurant and bar is the highlight of local nightlife, providing karaoke nights, pool tournaments and poker nights for both locals and visitors to enjoy.
