A Little About Eugene, Oregon!
Geography of Eugene
Eugene, Oregon is widely revered as one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. Situated in the visually striking southern section of the Willamette Valley where the Willamette and McKenzie rivers meet, Eugene is undoubtedly one of the best places to live in the Pacific Northwest.
Water-lovers are quick to point out Eugene is located merely 50 miles away from the state's coastline. All in all, Eugene has around 160,000 residents yet plenty more drop by to visit this beautiful green city every single year. Most people know of Eugene as the home of the University of Oregon.
However, Eugene has plenty more to see and do than the events that take place on the University of Oregon campus. In fact, Max's Tavern and several other local sites were used as inspiration when the writers of The Simpsons episodes first put pen to paper. Revered for its vast green spaces, clean air and seemingly endless recreational opportunities,
Eugene has something for everyone, regardless of their age or demographic. Whether you enjoy peaceful drives through a tranquil natural setting, kayaking, rafting, hiking, running or biking, you will love spending time in Eugene. In fact the city's slogan of "A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors" reflects its picture-perfect setting.
History of Eugene
The history of Eugene dates all the way back to the first settlers in the area known as the Calapooia or the Kalapuyans. These tribes were somewhat nomadic in that they moved around the Eugene countryside, gathering food and growing crops.
Several other tribes also lived within the villages positioned in what is modern-day Eugene. Examples of those tribes include the Mohawk Calapooians, the Lungtum and the Winefelly.
Local historians insist there is a good chance the forefathers of the Kalapuyans might have lived in Eugene for a period of 10,000 years. However, the arrival of American settlers combined with epidemics fueled by diseases brought to town during the French fur trade explosion decimated local Native American populations.
The French fur traders settled in the area at the start of the 1800s. Sadly, the remaining Native Americans were forced to relocate to reservations. The city of Eugene was subsequently named after Eugene Franklin Skinner, a settler who made his way to the Willamette Valley in the middle of the 19th century.
More than 1,000 other individuals settled in the area at the same time Skinner arrived. Visit Eugene in the summer, fall, winter or spring and you will find the climate is nearly perfect. The summers are fairly dry while the winters are comparably wet. However, Eugene does not have weather extremes that are characteristic of other parts of the United States.
This is a relatively mild climate with few significant weather events, making it perfect for people who enjoy driving and spending time outdoors. Take a spin through Eugene and you will find there is plenty of economic activity. Eugene has several large employers including the PeaceHealth Medical Group, the McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center, the University of Oregon and a wide array of small businesses.
Many of these businesses are geared toward the outdoors as Eugene provides all sorts of opportunities for outdoor fun.
Continue driving through Eugene and you will find there is always something interesting to do.
