Dayton was first founded by a group of 12 explorers known as the Thompson Party. These explorers were seeking to explore the Ohio River Valley before stopping along the Great Miami River once discovering two Native American camps. Two other groups joined the Thompson Party as they set out to create a road that would link the new village to where their journey began, in Cincinnati. The city would become extremely important throughout the 1800s as it was the home to the Cincinnati-Dayton canal that would contribute significant commercial and population growth to both cities.
Perhaps the most famous Daytonians were the Wright Brothers, who often used Huffman Field as a testing ground for their new flying machine. These famous Daytonians caused Dayton to become known as the “Birthplace of Aviation.” Huffman Field and the surrounding land were purchased by the government to build an Air Force base known as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Dayton was also involved in the Dayton Project, a branch of the Manhattan Project. The overall project was to create atomic weapons during World War II. Dayton has been a historically important city in United States history.
Today, there are a ton of great places to visit and learn about the dense history of Ohio. The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, multiple centers focused on the Wright Brothers, as well as the SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park are a few of the places you can visit in Dayton. While there are plenty of museums, many people forget the natural beauty surrounding Dayton and it’s countless bike paths. Five Rivers MetroParks has stunning views and is very friendly to walkers and bicycle riders alike.
Dayton has also become known for its arts, specifically dance. Dayton is home to many different ballet troupes that often perform at the historic Victoria Theatre, or the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center. Another important part of Dayton’s identity is its food. Dayton takes their food seriously, one of the best examples of this being the iconic Pine Club. This famous steakhouse doesn’t take reservations, doesn’t serve dessert, doesn’t take credit cards, and every entree comes with onion rings. Dayton is an interesting city that is often overlooked despite having so much to offer for anyone and everyone!
