A Little About Raleigh, North Carolina!
Raleigh is the capital city of North Carolina. It is located in the central region of the state and is part of the ‘Research Triangle’ area.
It’s also one of the state’s biggest centers for education, with several notable higher education institutions in the area.
Geography
is located in central North Carolina, in an area marked by many rolling hills and changes in elevation. The city is known for its large oak trees, which line the streets of many residential areas.
Interstates 40 and 440 create a circular beltline that runs around the city. The area within the beltline is much denser and is home to much older buildings than the area outside the beltline.
The area outside the beltline features newer suburban developments. The weather in Raleigh is very humid and can get very hot in the summer. The city often experiences intense storms in the late summer and early fall months.
These include hurricanes as well as the occasional tornado. In the winter, the weather is much cooler with occasional snow. Raleigh also experiences ice storms and freezing rain during the winter.
History
Raleigh is a part of Wake County, which was founded in the late 1700s. The town of Raleigh was built shortly after. Downtown Raleigh was a planned community that was built during the Revolutionary War.
The new city was chosen as the capital of North Carolina because of its central location. Since it is located away from the coast, it was considered safe from external attacks.
This proved useful during the Civil War, as the city remained relatively undamaged. The city struggled economically after the Civil War due to the Reconstruction. The city remained fairly stagnant until after the Great Depression when the city government launched public works projects to create new jobs.
In the late 1950s, the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill governments collaborated with local universities and businesses to build Research Triangle Park. This quickly became the largest research center for science and technology in the United States and resulted in a population boom for Raleigh that is still continuing today.
Culture
Raleigh has seen consistently strong population growth over the past century, with some of the highest levels of growth between the 1990s and today. Much of this is due to the high-tech job opportunities in the area. While Research Triangle Park remains the center for many of these jobs, there are also many biotech startups that have expanded into the surrounding area.
Additionally, the city is a notable center for advanced textile development as well as retail distribution. With so many excellent job opportunities in the area, many publications have rated Raleigh as one of the top cities to move to for young professionals.
The Raleigh area is also an important center for education. The vibrant economy in the area provides job opportunities for recent graduates.
North Carolina State University is located just west of downtown Raleigh, while the University of North Carolina and Duke University are located in nearby Chapel Hill and Durham, respectively.
As a result, Raleigh has a very high percentage of residents with college degrees. Raleigh is also an important cultural center in North Carolina.
There are several respected museums in the area, including the North Carolina Museums of Art, Natural Sciences, and History, as well as the Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh and the Gregg Museum of Art and Design. Downtown Raleigh is also home to several small galleries as well as many performing arts venues.
The most notable performing arts center in Raleigh is the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts both local and touring performing arts companies. The Coastal Credit Union Music Park also hosts large concerts, especially during the summer season.
Although there has been plenty of new development in Raleigh over the past few decades, there are also several notable historic neighborhoods. The Oakwood area is just north of downtown Raleigh and contains many stunning Victorian-era homes.
Another notable historic area is the town of Apex, which is a suburb of Raleigh and has a charming small-town feel. Closer to the downtown area is Five Points, which is known for its trendy restaurants and shops as well as small historic homes from the early 20th century.
Finally, the historic Boylan Heights district is located just west of downtown and offers some of the most stunning homes in the area. It’s close to downtown and to North Carolina State University, which makes it a very attractive place to live.
