The town was originally built in the pattern of a conventional Spanish villa, meaning it had a central plaza as its focal point along with a church, residences and government buildings. The city's central plaza stills stands today. Locals call it "Old Town Albuquerque" while historians and Spanish speakers sometimes refer to it as "La Placita", meaning Little Plaza.
