A Little About Ionia, Michigan!
Ionia is a small town in central Michigan.
It is located along the Grand River and is directly between the larger cities of Grand Rapids and Lansing.
Geography
Ionia is roughly 40 minutes east of Grand Rapids and 40 minutes from Lansing, making it easy for residents to commute to either of these cities.
The town is very small at just over five square miles, and most of the area consists of the flat plains that Michigan is known for.
The Grand River runs through the southern end of town and branches off into the smaller Prairie Creek just east of downtown. The climate of Ionia is typical of a town in the Midwest.
The summers are hot and can get very humid, while winters are cold and can have heavy snowstorms. The area also experiences distinct spring and fall seasons.
The Grand River is prone to flooding during the spring due to storms as well as melting snow.
This area can also be quite foggy at times with low visibility.
History
The Odowa indigenous people lived in this area before European settlers first arrived.
The Chippewa, Pottawatomie, and Ottawa tribes all lived in the surrounding area as well. The Odowa had a small settlement along the Grand River where Ionia is now.
When a group of settlers from New York arrived in the early 19th century, the Odowa decided to sell their crops to the settlers and move several miles north.
The settlers then organized and incorporated the town, which officially became a city in 1873. The name Ionia comes from a historic part of Greece.
Culture
Ionia has a very welcoming small-town atmosphere. The cost of living is much lower than the national average, which is very attractive for families looking to live comfortably on a budget.
Since the city is very spread out, most residents own a car and commute that way. Ionia serves as the seat for greater Ionia County, so there are many local government buildings in town.
These provide jobs for many local residents. The county has its own school district with facilities in Ionia as well. Many people in Ionia work at either the Ionia Correctional Facility, Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility, or the Michigan Reformatory, three men’s prisons that are located just outside of downtown Ionia.
These prisons offer both maximum and medium-security units. The Michigan Reformatory has been present since the 19th century, but the other two properties are much newer. There are several parks and public outdoor spaces in town, which residents can enjoy when the weather is warm.
The Ionia Fairgrounds hosts the Ionia Free Fair during the warmer months, which features live music, animals, tractor rides, and other fun family attractions.
The Shadow Ridge Golf Course is located just south of town, although there are many other golf courses and country clubs within a twenty-mile radius of Ionia.
The Bertha Brock Park is a popular local meeting place and often hosts outdoor weddings and parties. The park features campsites, hiking trails, tennis, softball, and disc golf courses, sledding in the winter, and playgrounds for kids.
Another popular place to spend time outdoors is the Portland State Game Area. This area offers hunting during certain times of year, and you can also go boating on the Grand River.
Additionally, there are several places throughout Ionia County where old railroads have been converted into trails. These trails are great for running or biking in the warmer months.
There is a small historic downtown area in Ionia with some notable historic structures. The John C. Blanchard House is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
The house and its adjacent carriage house have been preserved as a museum that visitors can tour. There are also small exhibits run by the Ionia County Historical Society, which feature information about life in Ionia in past centuries.
Other historic buildings include the Ionia Grand Trunk Railroad Depot as well as the Ionia County Courthouse, which has a very ornate design. Since Ionia is so close to both Grand Rapids and Lansing, many people commute to these nearby cities.
Lansing is the state capital and is also home to Michigan State University. Grand Rapids has a very unique artsy culture and is home to several museums and galleries. Grand Rapids also has a thriving culinary scene and is home to a large concentration of craft breweries.
