History of West Warren
West Warren, MA a town in Massachusetts' Worcester County, has around 6,000 residents. The roots of West Warren stem all the way back to 1664 when the area was first settled. West Warren was officially incorporated in 1741. At the time, the land was referred to as the town of Western.
Though few know it, West Warren was originally considered to be a component of the Quaboag Plantation. In fact, the land that is now West Warren was actually a component of Brookfield for nearly 70 years prior to being renamed as West Warren. Today, West Warren is partially made up of land that was petitioned from Kingsfield as well as the Quaboag Plantation.
The Kingsfield area petitioned to become part of West Warren includes sections of Brimfield and Palmer. Fast forward to the spring of 1834 and the town of Western was renamed as West Warren to pay homage to General Joseph Warren. Warren passed away in the American Revolutionary War's Battle of Bunker Hill.
The town was renamed as there was some question as to whether people would confuse its moniker with Weston, a different town in the state of Massachusetts. In fact, the mail service made a litany of mistakes due to the town names being so similar so it only made sense to make the change at the time.
