A Little About Boston, Massachusetts!
Boston is a city with an incredibly rich history dating back to the 17th century and the founding of the United States.
Today, Boston is a thriving economic and cultural center,
although it maintains many landmarks and pieces of infrastructure that date back hundreds of years.
The city attracts people from all over the world and is known for its educational institutions as well as its entrepreneurial spirit.
Geography of Boston
Boston sits on the east coast of the United States and is the northernmost city in the Northeast Megalopolis.
The Massachusetts Bay is to the east of downtown, and the Charles River separates Boston from Cambridge.
The city’s population is relatively small due to where its boundaries lie, but the greater metro area is one of the largest in the United States.
Boston has several distinct neighborhoods, many of which retain characteristics from when they were originally founded.
Downtown Crossing, South End, North End, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, and many other neighborhoods are known for their historic homes.
Many buildings in these neighborhoods date back to the Victorian era or even earlier. Downtown Boston is not laid out on a grid, and many of its streets began as cow paths hundreds of years ago.
Because Boston is so densely populated, many of its residents get around by walking, biking, or taking public transportation. The MBTA’s rapid transit system is one of the oldest in the country.
There are four distinct train lines in the city, as well as a larger network of commuter rail lines that run to nearby suburbs and towns. Part of Interstate-93 runs underground in downtown Boston.
This highway used to run above ground, but the “Big Dig” project in the 1990s moved it into a tunnel. In terms of weather, Boston experiences all four seasons.
The city experiences very intense snowstorms during the winter. However, the summer months are very pleasant and tend to be quite sunny. The area is also known for beautiful fall foliage.
History of Boston
European settlers originally made their way to Boston in the 1600s. They originally settled in Charlestown, a neighborhood north of the Charles River that still remains today.
Colonists eventually moved to the area that is now downtown Boston. It was one of the largest cities in the original 13 colonies and played a very important part in the American Revolution.
Some of the most noteworthy events from this era that happened in Boston include the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Bunker Hill.
After the United States declared its independence from Britain, it became a key international port city. Irish immigrants started moving to the city in large numbers in the 19th century, and Irish residents make up the largest ethnic group in Boston today.
This started a long tradition of immigration in Boston. Large groups of immigrants from Italy, Germany, Russia, and other European countries started moving to the area as well.
Later on, this was followed by waves of Lebanese and Syrian immigrants. Today, the city is also home to many Chinese, Dominican, Salvadoran, and Brazilian immigrants, among many other groups.
Culture of Boston
Boston and the neighboring city of Cambridge make up one of the largest educational centers in the United States.
Some of the most notable schools in the area include Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Berklee College of Music, Boston University, Tufts University, and Northeastern University.
The city is also one of the foremost scientific research centers in the world and is known for the high quality of its medical system. In general, Bostonians are very invested in creating a thriving community.
This is evident in the quality of its medical and educational systems, as well as its diverse economy and successful cultural institutions. The city has many notable museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum.
The Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Ballet are both renowned performing arts companies. The city is also a popular tourist destination.
Many visitors come specifically to see the historic sites on the Freedom Trail. This trail starts at Boston Common, which is the oldest public park in the United States, and runs up to the Bunker Hill Monument.
Some of the notable sites on the trail include the Old State House, Faneuil Hall, and the Paul Revere House. Boston’s cuisine tends to focus on fresh seafood, and has some influences from British and Irish cuisines as well.
Sports are a very popular pastime in Boston, and teams like the Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins have large followings. Bostonians are also known for having a sarcastic sense of humor.
