As many Americans and people all over the world know, Washington D.C. is an important location, both historically and today. It is the only federal city in the United States and the only city that is controlled by the federal government. It was first founded in 1791, the first part of the name derived from the first president of the United States, and the second, a common poetic name used for the recently independent country, Columbia. This name is the female version of Columbus, referring to the famous Italian explorer.

During the War of 1812, the Capitol, Treasury, and White House were burned down during a British invasion of Washington D.C. The three buildings were repaired and rebuilt quickly thereafter. The city grew quickly and by 1950, the city peaked with over 800,000 residents in the small federal city. Despite the city’s inherent ties to the federal government, residents did not have any representation in Congress or in the Electoral College. This changed with the 23rd Amendment, allowing D.C. three electoral votes but still no representation in Congress. By 1973, the federal government passed an act to allow Washington D.C. a mayor and city council. To this day, Congress representation has been a hotbed of political controversy for Washington D.C. residents.
