A Little About Wichita, Kansas!

Wichita is a mid-size city in southern Kansas. It was traditionally a cow town and later became an important center of the aviation industry.

Although Wichita is the center of its own metro area, but the culture is also very representative of Midwestern agricultural life.

Geography of Wichita

Wichita is quite sprawling and sits in the southeastern corner of Kansas. It sits on the Great Plains of Kansas and is prone to intense thunderstorms and the occasional tornado.

While the area is very hot and humid in the summer, it experiences snowstorms and freezing temperatures in the winter.

The Arkansas River runs through the center of the city. Downtown Wichita sits directly to the east of the river. North of downtown, the river breaks off into two sections.

The North Riverside neighborhood sits in between the main branch of the Arkansas River and the Little Arkansas River.

Wichita is quite sprawling, but there are several distinct neighborhoods.

Some of the areas along the Arkansas River contain houses left over from the city’s World War II-era boom.

Interstate 35 runs north-south through the center of the city, while US Route 400 bisects the city running east-west.

Wichita is part of the I-35 corridor, which connects to other major metro areas like Oklahoma City, Dallas, and Austin.

History of Wichita

The Wichita area has a rich history that predates European settlers. The Wichita Native American tribe lived in the area for hundreds of years, but eventually migrated due to local conflicts.

The Kiowa tribe also lived in the area as well. Archaeological digs have revealed that nomadic hunters have lived in the area for thousands of years.

Wichita officially became part of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase.

The first trading post was established in the area in the mid-19th century.

It later became a destination for pioneers, especially those involved in the cattle market.

Around this time, it also developed a cowboy culture with saloons and a ‘Wild West’ culture.

In the 20th century, the city was the site of an oil boom. Several oil refineries were set up in the area in the 1910s, although most of them were eventually demolished.

Shortly thereafter, the city decided to invest in aircraft manufacturing. They built their first municipal airport in the 1920s and built what is now the Dwight D.

Eisenhower National Airport in the 1950s. There have been multiple major aircraft manufacturers operating in Wichita over the last century.

Aircraft manufacturing in Wichita was crucial to the US military effort during World War II. The municipal airport later became McConnell Air Force Base.

In addition to this booming aircraft business, Wichita was an important center for entrepreneurship in the 1950s.

In particular, fast food chains like White Castle and Pizza Hut opened their doors in this area during this time.

Culture of Wichita

The aviation industry continues to thrive in Wichita and affects the culture of the city. Companies like Cessna, Beechcraft, and Airbus all have a presence in Wichita.

As a result, there are several different airports in the Wichita area. Many parts of Wichita maintain a blue-collar, industrial feel because of the many manufacturing plants there.

As the largest city in Kansas, Wichita offers a number of cultural attractions and different forms of entertainment.

There are several notable museums in the area, including the Wichita Art Museum, the Exploration Place science museum, the Kansas Aviation Museum, and the Museum of World Treasures.

The Sedgwick County Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the country, and the Botanica Gardens are very popular as well.

The massive Keeper of the Plains statue represents the area’s Native American history, while the Old Cowtown Museum gives visitors a look inside the cowboy culture of Wichita in the 1800s.

Many events and performances happen in Wichita throughout the year, drawing people from throughout the state.

The Old Town area serves as a central entertainment district with local music and movie venues.

Both rock and country music have historically been very popular in Wichita.

Despite being the birthplace of many fast food chains, there are also several popular independent restaurants in the downtown area. Barbecue is particularly popular in this area.

The city of Wichita is slowly growing, and residents have expressed an interest in urban renewal projects for downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The city built a new arena in the early 2000s, and has slowly transformed old warehouses into shops and entertainment venues.

While there has been plenty of new development, there are also many homes that remain from the World War II era.

Wichita is an important center of history and culture in Kansas and the midwestern United States as a whole.
