Though this fort eventually burned down, another, dubbed Fort Clark, was built in its place. The County of Peoria was officially organized in the 1820s.

It is at this time that Fort Clark was renamed as Peoria. Though the original meaning of "Peoria" is unknown,

historians believe its name is a derivative of the Proto-Algonquian word that is translated to dreaming with the assistance of a manitou.

Fast forward to 1835 and Peoria was officially incorporated as a village. The city had a president in Rudolphus Rouse who served in this role for a year.

However, the city did not have a mayor for some time. The first mayor was officially elected in April of 1845 when the city was incorporated.

Peoria grew rapidly largely as a result of its prime position on the Illinois River. Today, Peoria stretches across more than 50 square miles, the vast majority of which is land.

However, Peoria's winters are characterized by low temperature and snow. As one of the river's top ports, Peoria serves as a shipping and trading center.
