History of Chicago

Since its inception, Chicago and the area that it occupies was destined to become an important area for modern commerce. The massive Chicago River flows through the city, and two of the most important water transit systems are within a few hours' drive. Chicago is located right off of the coast of Lake Michigan, one of the most important lakes that make up the Great Lakes. Due to its central location and proximity to such massive areas of water, the Chicago area has been inhabited for thousands of years. It wasn't until 1837 that Chicago, the city we know today, began to take shape as one of the largest and most economically influential and important cities in the world.

Chicago and its success was not without its trials and trying times. Countless conflicts with Native Americans, most famously the Black Hawk War, and the destruction of multiple military forts, most notably Fort Dearborn, had made Chicago's founding and success far from effortless. Perhaps the most trying of all though was The Great Fire in 1871 that destroyed one-third of the city and left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Fortunately, the city's railroads and factories survived the flames and aided in rebuilding the city quickly.

Another tragedy occurred during the 1886 Haymarket affair that caused police officers to open fire on unarmed civilians, and eventually each other after the confusion following an anarchy-driven bombing. This event sparked protests across the city as employees of meatpacking plants begin protesting against the inhumane and unsafe practices of these companies.

During the years of World War I, racial tensions were high across the south causing many African Americans to move north to Chicago. These southern immigrants helped influence and shape much of Chicago's jazz and blues music and culture. By the 1930s, Chicago was a multinational, melting pot of over 3 million people.

Chicago Today

Today, Chicago is as much of a melting pot of various nationalities as it was in the 30s. Nowadays, things are a lot more peaceful as social upheavals aren't something you have to worry about much anymore. Chicago is split up into 77 well-defined neighborhoods across the massive city of Chicago. Those neighborhoods are split into nine districts but it is most important to know the North, West, Downtown, and South sides of Chicago. The Chicago that everyone thinks of, such as bustling city streets and countless convenient stores, is in downtown Chicago. The Westside focuses on the numerous cultures that call Chicago home, while the Northside tends to be where the nightlife is. Many people who are worried about Chicago's safety tend to generalize the entire city based on the Southside.

This is because of a few specific neighborhoods that have become synonymous with gang violence. Fortunately, these few neighborhoods do not represent the city as a whole. Chicago is a massive and beautiful city that has so many varying influences and cultures that have come together to create a cultural experience unlike anywhere else in the United States. Going to Chicago is like going to any country in the world within only a few miles of another. The people of Chicago understand that they are a people of many cultures, not just one, and embrace their individuality as well as the roots that they share in the great city of Chicago!
