Often referred to as a paradise, Punta Gorda is a vibrant seaside city that sprawls across the sandy shores and blue waves of the Gulf Coast.

Notable as being one of the best places to live along the Florida coastlines, the city thrives with a mixture of suburban neighborhoods and two miles of crisp, beautiful beaches.

As of 2021, Punta Gorda boasts a population of roundabout 19,000 people, many with a median age of 66.

The city has become a go-to place to retire since everything anyone could need or want is easily accessible. Pair that with beachy, breezy vibes, and you have a good life.

Some History of Punta Gorda, FL

Located in Charlotte County, Punta Gorda was founded in 1884 as the jutting landmass that extends into Charlotte Harbor. The name, Punta Gorda, is Spanish for “fat point,” because the city was a “fat point” of land that protruded into the Gulf.

The city was sectioned into waterfront blocks in 1885, with every block declared a park. The designated blocks, now known as a sequence of public parks, were named Harborwalk, and it’s a 2.5-mile-long promenade that overlooks the Charlotte Harbor oceans.

Charlotte Harbor spans the west coast of Florida and encompasses 219 miles of beautiful shorelines, dotted with fishing piers and marine sanctuaries.

Punta Gorda, being part of Charlotte Harbor on its south side, has been noted as one of the best fishing cities in the United States.

Anglers have been known to catch everything from grouper to tarpon and redfish, to spotted sea trout and snook. You might even spot a few bull sharks hanging around.

Punta Gorda was founded by Isaac Trabue, a lawyer, businessman, and Civil War Union soldier, who lived in Florida for almost three decades.

People described Trabue as ambitious and business-focused, so you can imagine his delight at the prospects of Punta Gorda.

He was into the coal mining industry by the late 1800s, with high hopes of turning Punta Gorda into an import/export hub for coal and mining supplies.

Trabue bought 380 acres of land alongside the Peace River, which would become Punta Gorda. He wanted to name the city “Trabue” after him and his family, but the townsfolk hated that idea.

He wasn’t a well-liked man. He had a reputation for being argumentative and hard to get along with. In fact, he was eventually driven from the city, losing rights to the land shortly before his death in 1907.

A Few More Punta Gorda Fun Facts…

● 2004 was a difficult year for Punta Gorda when the eye of Hurricane Charley passed directly over the city. The hurricane devastated the city, but the locals set precedence for preservation and restoration.

Within a matter of months, they had restored and rebuilt Punta Gorda. They took special care in the restoration of historic sites, such as Harborwalk.

● Punta Gorda was voted The Most Beautiful Small Town in America in 2013. The competition was hosted by Rand McNally, the creator of Best of the Road US Atlases.

● Punta Gorda is an active, exercise-friendly community with bicycle paths that interweave and connect throughout the city. You can bring your own bike or rent one from a depot.
