A Little About Ocala, central Florida!
Ocala is a small city in central Florida. Despite its relatively small population, Ocala has a very rich history dating back to the 16th century.
It is just west of the massive Ocala National Forest, and is a popular gateway for those looking to explore central Florida’s natural attractions.
Geography
Ocala is located in north-central Florida. Although it is the center of its own metropolitan area, Ocala is within driving distance of many of the larger cities in the state.
For example, it is just an hour and a half away from Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona Beach. It’s also just a 40-minute drive from Gainesville and the University of Florida.
Because of its central location, Ocala is a great place to live for people who want to explore everything that the Sunshine State has to offer.
The city of Ocala is also just outside the Ocala National Forest. This forest is densely packed with trees and also contains hundreds of lakes and rivers.
The area has also historically been recognized for its springs. The region is full of lush greenery and is very scenic all year round.
Like many other parts of Florida, the weather in Ocala is very warm and humid throughout the year. The summer months are very wet, and this area is known for its intense thunderstorms.
History
Ocala’s history dates back to the 16th century when Spanish explorers discovered a Timucua settlement where present-day Ocala is. At the time, the Timucua were the largest Native American group in the area.
The Seminole people eventually occupied the area as well. In the early 19th century, the US Army built Fort King as a base in Ocala, which was eventually used in the Second Seminole War.
Fort King has been preserved as a historic site and remains in place today as a National Historic Park. As Ocala developed, it became an important agricultural center, with the development of farms and plantations.
Some parts of Ocala are still very rural to this day. However, a fire in the late 19th century burnt most of downtown Ocala, prompting the city to rebuild with more commercial and industrial development.
During this time, residents also built many traditional Victorian homes, which have been preserved in the city’s historic districts.
Residents started building horse farms in the area in the mid-20th century, many of which can still be found there today.
Culture
The most notable part of Ocala’s culture is its tie to horse racing. It is often called the “Horse Capital of the World”. There are several horse farms in the area, and some of the world’s most successful racehorses have come out of Ocala.
These include Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winners. The city also hosts equestrian competitions and shows throughout the year.
Many visitors come to Ocala to ride horses at local farms and explore the large network of horseback riding trails in the area. In addition to horse farms, there are also several local produce farms where you can pick your own fruits and vegetables.
Because much of Ocala is very rural, most residents get around by car. However, the city does run a small network of local buses.
Amtrak and Greyhound buses connect downtown Ocala to other cities in the north and central Florida. The Ocala area is full of natural beauty and is a great place for people who enjoy outdoor activities.
The Ocala National Forest has trails for hiking and biking, and you can also go kayaking or snorkeling in one of the area’s many lakes. Some other popular places to spend time outdoors are KP Hole Park and Rainbow Springs State Park.
In nearby Silver Springs State Park, you can ride on a glass-bottom boat and see local wildlife both in and out of the water.
Ocala also has several other unique attractions that are fun for both residents and visitors. The Appleton Museum of Art has a venerable collection of works from all over the world.
You can also still visit the preserved Fort King National Historic Site and walk through interpretive trails to learn more about the area’s history.
The city also has a vibrant downtown area, which is full of historic buildings as well as local restaurants, bars, shops, and galleries.
Ocala hosts regular farmers’ markets and art walks to bring the community together. Downtown is also home to Ocala Tuscawilla Park, which contains a lake, sports facilities, a science center, and an art center. Overall, Ocala is a very vibrant community with plenty of things to do for people of all ages.
