A Little About Miami, Florida!

Miami is hands-down one of the most aesthetically pleasing cities in the United States.

Positioned along the Atlantic coastline in the Sunshine State of Florida, Miami has more people than all but two metropolises on the East Coast.

Geography

Miami is the 7th-largest city in the entire nation. Featuring more than 300 high rise buildings, the City of Miami has the country's third-tallest skyline.

If you live in Miami or are visiting the area, you have the opportunity to take some truly epic snapshots of the city's skyline, especially when the sun is rising and setting.

Miami has the largest urban economy in all of Florida and the 12th-largest economy in the country. The city's economic activity is quantified with a local GDP in excess of $344 billion.

Whether you are looking to have some fun in the sun, dance the night away in a nightclub or watch professional sporting events, you will have a blast in Miami. This racially and ethnically diverse city has been dubbed the Capital of Latin America.

In fact, more than 72% of the city's population is of Latino and Hispanic descent. Local employers include international banks, Jackson Memorial Hospital, the University of Miami, the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and companies in the biotech sector.

Though few know it, Miami's PortMiami is the world's busiest cruise port. Only New York City receives more international visitors than Miami.

History

Miami's history dates back to the Tequesta tribe which lived in the area for several thousands of years prior to being contacted by European colonists. This tribe had several villages in the Miami area with hundreds of individuals who resided in this beautiful part of the state between 500 B.C. and 600 B.C.

However, the entirety of this tribe eventually migrated to Cuba by the mid-18th century. The first governor of Florida, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, claimed the space that we now refer to as Miami for Spain. A Spanish mission was in place merely one year after the area was claimed by the Spaniards.

The entire state of Florida including Miami was ruled by the Spanish and British until it was ceded to the United States in the early 19th century. Miami was a hotbed for battles in the Second Seminole War when the United States engaged in battle with the Seminoles.

It is particularly interesting to note Miami is the only major city in the country founded by a woman. That woman, named Julia Tuttle, was a popular Miami citrus specialist. In fact, Tuttle owned the land where the city of Miami was first established.

The city of Miami was officially incorporated in July of 1896 in spite of the fact that it had a mere 300 residents. The city's namesake pays homage to the Miami River which was named after the Mayaimi, a moniker that refers to Lake Okeechobee and the natives who lived in the area.

Miami's population soared in the 1920s as northerners relocated in the sunny south in large numbers. Though Miami's development slowed in the 1930s as a result of the Great Depression and the devastating 1926 Miami Hurricane, the population reached nearly 175,000 by 1940.

Culture

Take a drive through Miami and you will find there is no shortage of cultural, arts, sports and community-oriented activities and attractions. Coconut Grove is highlighted by its wide array of gardens and parks including the Vizcaya Museum, the Barnacle Historic State Park and The Kampong.

The Upper Eastside and Design District features historical homes dating all the way back to the early 20th century including the signature Miami Modern architecture within the uber-popular MiMo Historic District. Perhaps the best part about living in and visiting Miami is its amazing weather.

Miami has mild winters, warm autumns, lovely springs, and hot summers. Though Miami receives its fair share of rain, the area does not receive snow. The primary threat to the city in terms of potential natural disasters is the hurricane season which is active from June through November.

Continue driving through Miami and you will find plenty of 5-star restaurants serving Latino fare, Cuban food and tasty alcoholic drinks of all different varieties. Miami is home to the Miami Heat basketball team, the Marlins MLB squad, and the University of Miami Hurricanes sports teams.

Additional local hotspots include the famous South Beach, Brickell City Centre, Bayside Marketplace, the Art Deco District, the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, and Fashion Week Miami which draws millions of tourists every single year.

Miami has more than its fair share of festivals including the Calle Ocho Festival, a single-day fiesta that leads up to Carnaval Miami. This festival takes place each March in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood.
