A Little About Fort Pierce, Florida!
In 1715, a Spanish fleet of treasure ships sunk off the coast of what is now St. Lucie County, Florida.
The seashores there have since been known as Treasure Coast, a coastline that is home to some of the oldest cities in The Sunshine State.
Fort Pierce is one of those cities. Nicknamed the Sunrise City, Fort Pierce is considered the sister city of San Francisco, also known as California’s Sunset City.
Fort Pierce is a port city that was founded in 1838. Named after Benjamin Pierce, a first commander in the United States army, the city served as a military supplies’ depot during the height of the Second Seminole War.
Before that, Fort Pierce had been established as an offshoot of Saint Lucia (St. Lucie), a county founded by Spanish explorers in 1565.
The history from there is both tragic and inspirational. Tragic in that the entire city burnt down in 1843, but inspirational in that it was rebuilt, better and stronger, as a village in 1901.
The railroads brought development to the city with new schools, stores, and a population boom in 1915. Fort Pierce has suffered and rebuilt time and again.
From a decline in 1988 to restored historic buildings and a revitalized Downtown area in 1994, the city has retained its charm and intrigue.
