A Little About Sun Valley, California
Sun Valley is a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. It is located in the San Fernando Valley region and is known for a youthful population that is moderately racially diverse. This is a pretty large neighborhood, with thirteen public schools and four private schools.
With over 81,000 residents in only 9.42-square-miles, the Sun Valley neighborhood is somewhat dense. Now the median age is 28, which makes it a young city. The median yearly household income is around $51,290, which is considered average for the city but low for the county.
Sun Valley is bordered on the northeast by Shadow Hills, and on the southeast by Burbank. South is North Hollywood which makes it part of the greater Los Angeles area. Originally, the area was a Tongva/Fernandeño village. It was called Wixánga, which comes from the word wixár, meaning something like "place/canyon of the thorns".
Many believe this is a reference to the abundant prickly pear cacti naturally found in the area. In 1874, a California State Senator acquired 56,000 acres across the San Fernando Valley. By 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad was constructed and the current name of Sun Valley was chosen in 1950 by residents.
Take in All of Los Angeles
The Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. It has a location that can give you views of the entire surrounding area which is a must-see if you come to this part of California.
The observatory also hosts fascinating exhibitions and features a top-notch planetarium. Although the Griffith Observatory is free, you will need to pay between $3 and $7 to see the planetarium shows.
Take a Trip to the Pier
West of downtown Los Angeles, you can find the Santa Monica Pier. This pier has one of the best and most well-known scenes in the United States. Santa Monica also offers a bunch of great restaurants and wonderful nightlife.
There are 3 miles of shoreline which are known as some of the best in the area. This is walkable, and something you can do with the entire family.
Explore Malibu
Malibu is the home to Zuma beach and a short ride from Sun Valley. Malibu has a reputation for excessive wealth and exclusivity, but all of the beaches are completely public.
The 1.8-mile beach of Zuma is the cleanest in the Los Angeles area. There are waves to surf, beach stands to eat, and plenty to keep you busy.
Walk Down Sunset Blvd.
Known as one of the most iconic streets in the United States, Sunset Boulevard is a legend. It represents the Hollywood lifestyle and has been the setting of many films.
Now you can find the palm-lined street connecting downtown LA to Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and the Pacific Coast Highway.
Take in a Unique Museum
Founded in 2015 it is an eye-catching, honeycomb building, filled with incredible art. Here you will find work by Jean Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, and Andy Warhol.
There are also permanent collections along with temporary exhibits. All admission is free, but some exhibits will need to be paid for. This is definitely something to do as it is only a quick drive away from Sun Valley.
Experience a Real Filming
Since the 1910s, Paramount has offered filming of all the extremely famous actors, including Meryl Streep and Morgan Freeman. Now, the site has been home to television shows like "I Love Lucy" and even movies like "Mission: Impossible" and "Titanic." It is the only remaining film studio in the Hollywood area today.
Therefore, if you want a real Hollywood experience, you can take a tour of the grounds. Head across 65 acres and see some recognizable studio sets along the way. You can also take the opportunity for a VIP tour. This is not something to miss when in the area of Sun Valley because it is only a short trip to Paramount.
22-Mile Bike Path
Take a scenic ride along the 22-mile bike path, which is known as The Strand. This runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean and takes riders through Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey along with Venice, Manhattan, Hermosa, and Redondo beaches.
You can also ride the Ferris wheel at the pier after and people-watch at the Third Street Promenade.
Neighborhood Located in the Los Angeles Area
Although Sun Valley is a neighborhood, it is quite big. This is perfect because it is in proximity to Los Angeles, which has a ridiculous amount of things to do.
If you like films, history, and even just a place to people watch, you can find that just a drive away. Head to one of the many beaches or see a show. There are endless possibilities in this area of California.
