A Little About Martinez, California!
From 1849 to 1852, Martinez was a supplies and shipping trading post during the gold rush that brought an influx of fortune-seeking folks to California.
Over 300,000 people flocked to the rivers around Sutter’s Mill, where gold had been found.
It put California on the map, and Martinez was incorporated as an official city in 1876.
When the railroads came through in 1877, Martinez experienced a small population boom that included new stores, schools, and homes.
Martinez is the epitome of charming old-world California, with antique shops, historic buildings, and preserved shorelines galore.
Located to the east of San Francisco Bay, with plenty of coastlines to itself, Martinez is a smaller California city with a population of 37,000 people.
The Natural Beauty and Parks in Martinez, CA
The hype lies in the city’s walking trails alongside the Carquinez Strait. It’s an eight-mile stretch of water-surrounded land that connects Martinez and San Francisco Bay with Suisun Bay.
Much of the city’s “things to do” revolve around nature and the natural beauty of the bay shorelines.
John Muir, the Father of National Parks, resided in Martinez, California, and he loved the natural beauty of the city.
He was one of history’s most famous conservationists and naturalists, convincing the government, and different cities across The United States, to name and preserve parks. He had a major influence on the impact of nature in Martinez.
Out of 17 parks and nature preserves in Martinez, these are some of the most popular in the city –
• Mount Wanda was one of John Muir’s favorite places to go. The scenic views flank either side of a lengthy hiking trail. Rangers here refer to it as The Nature Path, as much of the trial is lined with old oak trees.
There are sections of the trail that overlook Downtown Martinez from a distance, while other sections lead through fields of green grasses, golden wheat, and native flowers, like marigolds, desert sunflowers, woody asters, and desert lilies.
• John Muir Park is, of course, dedicated specifically to John Muir. It’s a smaller park, roundabout 1.5 acres, with a picnic area, dedicated benches under beautiful oak trees, and a playground for children.
Side note – John Muir Road is 10 minutes from The Cobra Experience, a classic cars exhibition at the Shelby Cobra Museum. The annual event, typically, has scheduled exhibits in April and May.
• Sprawled across 6,255 acres, Briones Regional Park is a California must-see with green, grassy, rolling hills as far as your eyes can see. The acreage is crisscrossed with hiking trails and bike paths, all of varying difficulty levels. Dogs are allowed as long as they are well-behaved, leashed, and up to date on their vaccines.
Visitors come here for the scenic views from the highest points in the park. You can see Mount Diablo and Diablo Valley, as well as the Sacramento River and East Bay Hills. There are five access points into and out of the park. The trails are good for runners, joggers, hikers, walkers, horseback riders, and birdwatchers, while the open spaces are perfect for picnics, kites, cloud watchers, and wildlife/nature photographers.
• Named one of the nicest parks in Martinez, Waterfront Park is exactly as the name suggests… a 150-acre park alongside the river. This park is the go-to for designated outdoor events, like Bike the Bridges, which was a Special Olympics bike ride.
There are also playgrounds, grassy fields, baseball fields, a skate park, and picnic areas. Plus, you have more than 20 trails to explore.
Where to Find Good Eats in Martinez, CA
Martinez is a proverbial melting pot of cultures and those cultures shine in the diners, restaurants, and eateries.
Parada New Peru, for instance, serves up a fusion of Peruvian and Latin dishes – all authentic, homemade, and delicious.
The restaurant is semi-formal, so dress in your best casual but nice clothes. It’s the perfect place for brunch or a date night. The food is semi-upscale with entrees between $16 to $55 apiece.
Some of their most popular dishes include tuna tartare in a Peruvian sauce, Yucca fries with cotija cheese, and Churrasco (New York steak served with Peruvian chimichurri sauce and spices).
Looking for quick, cheap eats? Barrelista has a diner vibe with homemade meals that won’t break the bank.
It’s a small-town coffee shop, complete with fresh-brewed cups of joe, lavender lattes, and a small breakfast menu.
Some local favorites include smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels, fresh and seasonal fruit bowls, avocado toast, and Panino Florentino.
How about a sweet treat? Martinez doesn’t skimp on desserts. The Double Rainbow Café is famous for serving huge sundaes, stacked with toppings.
Open until 9 pm, sometimes later, this is the perfect place to satisfy your sweets cravings in the evenings. Locals suggest the banana splits, Coconut Almond Joy ice cream, and coffee crunch milkshake.
Martinez is a small California city with a big presence, especially where nature is concerned. This is a city where you can have good eats, then find somewhere, like a pretty park to relax and take in the scenic views.
