History of Bakersfield
Bakersfield's history dates back to its early Native American settlers. Rewind time thousands of years into the past and you would find Native American settlements throughout what we now refer to as modern day Bakersfield. When the Spanish arrived at this part of California, Bakersfield was inhabited by a Yokuts tribe known as the Yowlumne.
These natives resided in lodges by the Kern River delta. The Yokuts hunted a wide array of animals ranging from game birds to bear, deer, fish, tule elk and antelope. The first-ever European to visit the area was the famous Spanish missionary known as Francisco Garces. Garces found his way to the Yokuts village by the Kern River slightly to the north of Bakersfield.
However, the Yokuts were primarily isolated from additional contact with outsiders all the way up until the end of the Mexican War of Independence. It is at this time when Mexican settlers started to move to the area now known as Bakersfield.
Fast forward to 1848 and Bakersfield received an influx of visitors during the state's famous gold rush. In fact, gold was discovered by the Kern River in 1851. Oil was found within the valley less than 20 years later.
An attorney named Thomas Baker, was drawn to the area during the gold rush. Baker migrated to the Kern River's banks in the late 19th century, living at what eventually became Baker's Field.
The area was officially incorporated in the form of a city in 1873 with its namesake stemming from the forementioned Baker.
