Rosa Parks started the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, and Martin Luther King Jr. began his Civil Rights work here as well. Throughout the 1950s and ‘60s, marches and protests in Montgomery led to desegregation, increased voting rights, and other necessary changes in Alabama law.

Montgomery has a thriving downtown area, much of which consists of preserved historic buildings. Much of the area’s revitalization is centered around the Riverfront development. The area includes the River Front Park, the Montgomery Biscuits baseball stadium, and the converted Union Station building. The park hosts concerts, sports games, and boat rides in the summer.Many attractions in Montgomery celebrate the area’s Civil Rights history.

These include the Civil Rights Memorial, Rosa Parks Museum, Freedom Rides Museum, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.Montgomery also has a thriving arts scene, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts has one of the most extensive art collections in the south. On top of that, Montgomery has many successful performing arts organizations, including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Performing Arts Center.

The Montgomery public school system is regarded by many as the most successful in the state. The city is also home to Alabama State University, Troy University, and Auburn University at Montgomery. Maxwell Air Force Base is also located in the city, just east of downtown. Because of this, Montgomery has a strong military presence.
