A Little About Newton, Alabama!
Founded in 1843, it was one of the major cities for Confederate recruiting during the Civil War. Being home to the battle of 1865 between local Home Guard units and pro-Union irregulars, there is now a monument located in downtown Newton, and often the place of re-enactments.
Following a fire that destroyed the courthouse in 1869, voters relocated the county seat to Ozark, which was more centralized. Newton remained a port for riverboats on the nearby Choctawhatchee, until the railroad arrived in 1890.
Now Newton is a small town with a population of 1,800. As a farming community, it is a rural town with most of the residents being conservative.
The estimated median home value is around $90,000, but it is known for low crime. This makes it a great place to live if you are on a budget, but also want to live in proximity to many large cities.

This is located in Dothan and is a history museum with exhibits on iconic scientist George Washington Carver. You can also find other African-American artists and enjoy a wonderful show.
Head to the Capital
Montgomery, Alabama is the capital, and there is plenty to do here less than 2 hours away. There is no end to the things to do in Montgomery. This city is well known for the many significant moments of the Civil Rights Movement.
Montgomery understands its role in preserving these historical sites and proceeds with the lessons that will continue to be told. Check out the Civil Rights Trail and learn about the events that changed the nation forever.
There is also an incredible art and entertainment scene. Unlike the capital of many other cities, you can learn a lot about history, civil rights, but similarly you can enjoy a great meal.
If you want something a bit more homegrown, you can go to the ballgame and root for the Biscuits. Truly an endless list of things to eat, experience, and see in the capital.
Remember Sketoe
In 1864 a local Methodist minister named Bill Sketoe was lynched. Because he was tall, a hole had to be dug beneath his feet to accommodate his large frame. Now, a local legend that there is ah ole that will always remain there, and "Sketoe's hole" remains a local attraction.
There is now a monument near the site for Sketoe that was dedicated in 2006, along with a local museum that displays items of Sketoe memorabilia.
Go to a Colombus That is Not in Ohio
Most people know the city of Colombus for being in Ohio but there is also a Colombus in Georgia. Columbus is a city in western Georgia. Situated along the Chattahoochee Riverwalk, it is perfect to head to the long promenade for walking or biking.
Stare out over the river and enjoy the National Civil War Naval Museum which displays the remains of 19th-century warships. The Coca-Cola Space Science Center is also home to an immersive theater and an observatory.
Then finish the day with the Columbus Museum, which houses American artwork and regional history exhibits.
Less than 2 hours away and a lot to experience, and it can be a fun road trip alone or with the family.
