Our Favorite Car Tips of the Month - May, 2016

We have a lot of fun on our Facebook page, and one of our favorite weekly posts is #CarTipTuesday.

Every Tuesday we post a small tip or trick that helps you get the most life out of your vehicle or helps keep your car clean. We even have reminders some small repairs most of us forget to get done.

In May, we talked a lot about getting your car summer ready and keeping your car safe during the rainy spring season.

We’ve decided to round up all of our favorite tips in a monthly blog post, so we can talk more about why we think it’s important. Check back every month for more!

1. Stay safe during the rainy season this year. If you can’t remember the last time you replaced your wiper blades — you’re probably way overdue! (Facebook, April 26)

We’re all guilty of going too long without changing our wiper blades. It’s something you never really think about until it starts raining and your wiper blades are just smearing the rain around on your windshield instead of helping you see. Wiper blades are supposed to be changed every 6 – 9 months, but this amount will fluctuate with use, so you might need new wiper blades in Seattle faster than in you lived in Los Angeles.

2. May is the last full month of spring! Be sure to spring clean your car. *Pay special attention to the undercarriage, which could still be hiding road grime and salt that leads to rust.* (Facebook, May 3)

Rust sneaks up on a vehicle. Once the snow starts to melt, you might be surprised what the cold, blizzardy weather did to your car while you were busy shoveling snow. You can do a few things to fight winter rust, but be sure to give your car a major clean after the snow is gone, and focus on the underside of your car, where a normal car wash might not be able to reach.

3. You should be rotating your tires about every 5,000 – 10,000 miles. When was the last time you had that done? ‪#‎CarTipTuesday‬ (Facebook, May 17)

Rotating your tires isn’t tough to do by yourself, but you can usually have it done for free when you get an oil change, and depending on what your owner’s manual says, an oil change and tire rotation line up at about the same mileage point.

4. We know it’s tough, but stay at the speed limit to save money on gas. (Facebook, May 24)

There are some sneaky ways to save money on gas, and one of our LEAST favorites is slowing down. It’s still important to remember that speeding up costs you money and might only save you a few seconds of time.
