How to Drive in The City | City Driving Tips 

Of all places that you’ve driven to or in, of all roads traveled across the world, there is still nothing compared to the city life driving. Not saying it’s the best or the most sought after, but it is by far the one that requires the most skill, the most effort, and the most concentration. City driving depending on where you are located can be fun, challenging, annoying, exciting, boring, and many other things. Depending on your location, strategy changes. For instance, Utah city driving is much different compared to Los Angeles driving. One has a smoother flowing system of driving and is much easier to navigate around, while the other is more congested and slower especially around downtown. One has a smaller population which enables the driver to drive faster, longer, and more efficiently. While the other is far more populated which disables the smoother & quicker style of driving and it makes the driver slow down and wait. These are small problems in the grand scheme of things, however it is still a factor. No matter the city you are in, no matter the population, no matter the style, we’ve got you covered.

• Be aware of your surroundings – One very key element when driving in a city is to always know what is around you and what is always approaching. This helps avoid accidents in congested cities and helps you to concentrate.

• Know what lane you need to be in – This step is vital especially when you are in the bigger cities. Once traffic gets going, it becomes very difficult to move your way around the lanes when your turn or exit is coming. Once you hit the road, get in the lane you need to be in, and stay there. This not only makes it easier to get to your destination, it means you won’t have to do the famous head turn checking to see if you can get over look.

• Follow the signs – It is very easy to get a ticket going normal speed in a zone that requires extreme slow speeds. Such as school zones, construction, etc. You may be going a safe speed such as the common 35 mph, but then there may be a sign saying ‘’Slow, kids walking’’ or ‘’Construction’’. You must be aware of where these are and when to expect them. This will save you money and headache over time.

• Don’t try and over do things – The key to a good driver is knowing when to do things and when not to do certain things. Don’t try and be that person that races to get in front of everyone, or the person that is angry at every possible moment. These types of drivers are by far the ones who are short-tempered, aggressive, they usually have tickets, car wrecks and other negative things on their record.

• Be authentic and original – Come again? Yes, that’s right. Be your own driver. Just because someone doesn’t let that driver over whether you’re in a rush or not, doesn’t mean you have to do the same. Courtesy goes a long way. Treat others the way you’d want to be treated. There’s no need in being angry at every chance you get while driving.

• Follow the traffic lights – When in the city, following the traffic lights is much more appreciated among other drivers than little town lights. Typically, you will see drivers running through beginning red lights and then there are those that refuse to drive on yellow because its too close to red. Please do us all a favor, just follow the lights. If it’s green, go. If it’s yellow slow down if too far away. And if it’s red, simply stop. This prevents accidents and other possible damages among drivers.

• Finally, practice patience – An impatient driver is a dangerous and careless driver. They are usually the ones you see making hard sharp turns, honking at everyone, going 75 in a 35 then complaining when they get a traffic ticket. Don’t be that person. It only makes you look immature and careless towards other drivers and even yourself.

Commutes to work and back home & Planning your routes Believe it or not, there is an art to accomplishing this efficiently. Depending on the city, this can either be very easy, or extremely difficult. However, I would suggest getting up early and getting out there before traffic becomes tragic. Try using the express lanes if you have a toll tag. They may save you time and headaches in the long run. On the way back, focus on your route. Any extra stops heading home depending on the city can easily add 20 minutes to your drive.   At the end of the day, the goal is to simply cut down time and get home safely. If you don’t plan your trips out, chances are you will have a much harder time.
